Selecting microphone mode

There are two different microphone mode options in Louper - Open mic and Push-to-talk.

Open Mic

Open mic means that your microphone is unmuted by default. To mute and unmute your microphone, you will need to press the Mic Mute / Unmute button (or press M on the keyboard). If you are currently unmuted, pressing the Mic Mute button will mute your mic and leave it muted until you press the Unmute Mic button.

Auto-ducking

In Open mic mode, you have the option to enable Auto-ducking. This feature automatically disables your mic when audio is detected in the livestream, and enables it again when the livestream does not contain an audio signal. Your mic will respond automatically to livestream audio: turning orange when disabled, and back to grey when enabled again. It prevents audio feedback in cases where the source audio is being locally monitored, for example:

  • livestream hosts who are monitoring audio output from their edit or DAW software through local speakers
  • hybrid sessions, where in-person guests are reviewing the source content locally, while remote participants are reviewing content inside the Louper Room

This means that the host or in-person guest does not need to manually mute their mic when the livestream is active, and unmute their mic when they want to speak.

Push-to-talk

Push-to-talk means that your microphone is muted by default and you will need to temporarily unmute it when you want to speak and be heard by other participants. This mode is useful for eliminating audio feedback or echo, especially when some participants are not wearing headphones. Unmuting yourself works slightly differently to how it does in Open mic mode - you need to click-and-hold the Unmute Mic button (or press and hold the M key on the keyboard) for as long as you are speaking. As soon as you let go of the Unmute mic button, your microphone will be automatically muted.

Changing microphone mode

The default microphone mode is set by the host in room settings. However, individual participants can change the microphone mode for themselves without affecting the microphone mode of other participants in the Room. In order to change the microphone mode for yourself:

  • Click the arrow next to the microphone button in the bottom tool bar
  • Select the desired microphone mode from the menu (either Open mic or Push-to-talk)
  • In Open mic mode, you can toggle the Auto-ducking feature on or off
